South Georgia & Antarctica
In June 2009 I had my first experience of a polar region when I visited Svalbard. Barely seven months later I was offered the opportunity to complete the experience and travel south to the Antarctic with Perengrine Adventures. Spending three weeks aboard the Akademik Vavilov I had my first taste of the wildlife spectacles that have made the Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula so famous. The scenic splendour was breath-taking and the experience is etched deeply into my memory.
The highlights are too many to mention, but would include bewildering numbers of King Penguins at Salisbury Plain and Gold Harbour on South Georgia, the grace of a soaring Wandering Albatross, the sinister grimace of a Leopard Seal and the magical beauty of scuptured icebergs around the Yalour Islands.
I'm not sure my images could ever do justice to the sights and scenes I witnessed, but I gave it a good shot.
