Indian Subcontinent

Steeped in history and entwined in mystery, India is an intoxicating mixture of culture, customs, colour and chaos. A visitor's senses are assaulted from the outset and the assault is unremitting.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) India is also a paradox. A dynamic State hurtling through the 21st century at break-neck pace, while simultaneously refusing to relinquish ancient traditions and beliefs. Economic and technological proliferation sits cheek by jowl with grinding poverty and rural and tribal ways of life that have seen minimal change in centuries.

Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis)The subcontinent embraces the greatest altitudinal range there is, and all the variations in climate and habitats that result. But environmentally India is bang in the front line. A tidal wave of humanity threatens arguably the most biologically diverse region on earth. Yet somehow, India still manages to cling to vestiges of wilderness - mountains, forests, deserts, grasslands, lakes and rivers - all still have their place.

Taj Mahal at dawnWhere else on Earth would tigers, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos still survive alongside an expanding human population that already tops 1.2 billion?

A photographer in India devoid of inspiration, is a photographer devoid of imagination. While India's national parks can not compete with those in Africa on scale, they certainly stand comparison with any on diversity, natural splendour and spine-tingling experiences. The Highlights portfolio is a diverse collection of Nick's wildlife and cultural images, mainly from central India. The regions most charismatic and iconic animal, the Tiger, warrants a portfolio of its own.

By Holly Shaw, aged 10

Terrifying Tigers chase their prey
Incisors as big as nails
Giant legs to run really fast
Ears to listen for human footsteps
Running fast, as if trying to race a Cheetah
Seeing their cubs they run to protect them
