About Nick

Nick on Marojejy peak (2137m) Madagascar.

Nick Garbutt graduated with an Honours degree in zoology from the University of Nottingham in 1988. He subsequently spent three months studying Proboscis Monkeys in Sarawak and then worked on a variety of research and conservation projects, both in the UK and abroad, before turning freelance in 1996. He is now a renowned wildlife author, photographer, artist and lecturer as well as an experienced tour leader.

His field and tour leading experience in tropical countries is considerable and includes Madagascar, Borneo, India, Nepal, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Ecuador & the Galapagos. Although choosing favourites is extremely difficult, Nick has a particular affinity for rain forests and regards those in Borneo, the Amazon and Madagascar as extra special.

Nick regularly contributes articles and photographs to a wide range of magazines such as National Geographic, Africa Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Africa Birds & Birding, Travel Africa, Geographical and Outdoor Photography. Through his agents, Getty Images, Natural History Photographic Agency (NHPA), Nature Picture Library, Okapia (Germany) and Wild Images/RSPCA, his photographs also appear in books, calendars, promotional material and other publications worldwide. He is also a Special Lecturer in Wildlife Photography and Imaging at his old University in Nottingham.

In 2000, Nick was the winner of the prestigious Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and in 1996 won the Urban & Garden Wildlife category in the same competition.

Nick is author/photographer of the acclaimed Mammals of Madagascar (Pica Press, 1999), the first and only comprehensive illustrated reference to this remarkable assemblage of mammals and Madagascar Wildlife - A Visitors Guide (Bradt, 2001), a pocket overview of the wildlife and protected areas of the island that has proved to be an invaluable companion for all those travelling to Madagascar.
