A Potted Biography
Nick graduated with an Honours degree in zoology from the University of Nottingham in 1988. He subsequently spent three months studying Proboscis Monkeys in Sarawak and went on to work on a variety of research and conservation projects, including Red Deer studies on the Isle of Rum and endangered bird conservation in Mauritius. Simultaneously he developed his interests in photography and writing and turned freelance in 1996.
He has forged a career primarily as a wildlife photographer and author, combining this with leading tours, lecturing and illustration. His travels have taken him all over the world.
Nick regularly contributes articles and photographs to a wide range of magazines such as National Geographic, Africa Geographic, BBC Wildlife and Outdoor Photography. And through his agents, Nature Picture Library, NHPA, Getty Images and the RSPCA Photo Library, his photographs also appear in books, calendars, promotional material and other publications worldwide. He is also a Special Lecturer at his old University in Nottingham on the MSc course in Wildlife Photography and Imaging.
In 2000, Nick was the winner of the prestigious Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and in 1996 won the Urban & Garden Wildlife category in the same competition. He has also had several Specially and Highly Commended images over the years.
Nick is also an accomplished illustrator, producing detailed ink drawings of wildlife, generally using his own photos as reference. These are used in his books to complement and augment his photography. He also sells originals and prints of his work. In 2009 he was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition, so becoming the first person to be recognised in both the BBC Wildlife photographic and art competitions.
Nick's books include: the acclaimed and best selling Mammals of Madagascar: A Complete Guide (A&C Black, 2007), 100 Animals to See Before They Die (Bradt Travel Guides, 2007), Wild Borneo (New Holland, 2006), Madagascar Wildlife: A Visitor’s Guide 3rd Ed (Bradt Travel Guides, 2008) and Mammals of Madagascar (Pica Press, 1999).
